Weekend getaways with children

Once the high summer season is over, we have many months ahead of us to travel ... at the best price. The offers that we can find from September to practically Easter, with the Christmas break in December, will mostly have an affordable price for most pockets to more or less close destinations, depending on the days we have.

Europe, thanks to the proximity of its capitals, would be one of the best recommendations that we could make to take this breath and enjoy weekend getaways with children, as a family or as a couple.

It is a place that is worth visiting at any time of the year. If you go when the temperatures begin to drop, you can take the opportunity to enjoy the "Scotch Whiskey Experience Tour" or, if you dare, to enter with your whole family in the City of the Dead, a guided walk that will take you to the Haunted cemetery or the underground city that hides Edinburgh under its oldest foundations. Perfect if your trip coincides with the Halloween celebration on October 31! But not everything is sinister. If what you want is fun and party, come to the Royal Oak and enjoy some authentic music folk live.

After summer, the best season to travel to London begins, since July and August are excessively sunny months that could distort the perception of the less expert traveler regarding the authentic climate that usually characterizes the British capital: rain, fog and the permanent smog surrounding the city. Some attributes that, together with the wide and varied cultural, gastronomic and leisure offer make London a classic destination to escape any weekend during the coming months.

As we said at the beginning of the article, Europe is full of beautiful cities to visit. But Spain also, and we often forget what we have at home and we look abroad for experiences that we could find closer, with the corresponding savings in time and money. Barcelona is a good example. Although it is a city that shines at its best in summer thanks to its sea and good weather, the Catalan capital offers much more than sun and beaches. Music festivals such as the Primavera Club, popular celebrations such as “La Mercè”, the city's own festival that takes place on September 24 or the wide range of first-rate gastronomic offerings are enough arguments to get closer to Barcelona.

The city for everyone. Madrid is a true pole of attraction for anyone who wants to enjoy a great metropolis, whatever time of year. Its cultural offer -Museo del Prado, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza or Reina Sofía- is at the same level as that of New York, Paris or London. If the objective of the trip is to go shopping, the Salamanca neighborhood, Chueca, Puerta del Sol or Gran Vía are excellent choices. If the getaway you have planned could not be alone and you finally take the whole family with you, the Retiro Park or the Warner Park are a guarantee of fun and entertainment for the little ones.

Famous for its Gothic architecture and its pointed skyline, the capital of the Czech Republic has become a popular destination for getaways in the fall. A popularity justified by its well-connected airport and its natural and historical attractions such as the Vltava River –which divides the city in two- or the Charles Bridge that connects both halves, a jewel of pre-Renaissance architecture from the 14th century. Despite its tourist attraction, visiting Prague outside of the summer season is relatively quiet, as its streets and promenades are emptied of tourists from September. Cruise along the Vltava, witness the changing of the guard at Prague Castle, visit the Astronomical Clock and the many Gothic churches that hide in the streets of the old town, or take the old railway to the Petrin Tower.

One of the most romantic cities in the world, Venice is beautiful all year round, but reaches its splendor in autumn, when the mass of summer tourists disappears. Travel quietly through its Renaissance canals in one of its traditional gondolas, taste the exquisite dishes - highly recommended seafood and fish - visit San Marcos Square and contemplate its delicate palazzi from the 16th and 17th centuries.

One of the most interesting Polish cities, and also one of the least known. There is no better time to visit it than in the fall, before the low temperatures of mid-winter make it practically impossible to walk through its streets without running the risk of suffering an immediate frostbite. Apart from restaurants and clubs, Krakow is famous for Wawel Castle, its Gothic churches or its markets. The Kazimierz Jewish quarter or any of its baroque buildings are also worth visiting.
